Mahatma Gandhi is known as Father of Indian nation. He led the Indians to fight against British to attain independence from the British rule. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse who is an extremist. Gandhi was aged 78 when he died and he was walking towards a prayer meeting in Birla House at New Delhi on January 30th 1948. Nathuram Godse was assisted by Narayan Apte in assassinating Gandhi. They both were hanged later.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated as he always wanted Hindu community to mingle with Muslims. He intended all the people to live in harmony and maintain it among Hindus and Muslims. He actually opposed the partition between India and Pakistan during the Indian independence. Though India became independent, it was still under British rule with Lord Mountbatten as the Governor General. Many British people were still in important posts in the Government. Pandit Jayaprakash Narayan alleged Sardar Patel who was Home minister at the time of Gandhi’s assassination that he had no power to take care of the situation. Sardar Patel was accused of not able to save Gandhi from being murdered.
Gandhi was reported to be unhappy about the communal violence that took place regarding the fight between Hindus and Muslims. He addressed all the people to stay calm and live together. When no other leader was ready to listen to Gandhi’s ideas against the partition, Gandhi went on silent fasting to bring the situation under control. Gandhi further wanted to travel to Pakistan and settle over there in order to prove that India and Pakistan are equal for him and they should not be separated. He decided to settle in Pakistan. But ultimately partition occurred. Gandhi’s idea of secularism and sovereignty which he wanted to strictly impose made the Hindus outraged. Hindus could not digest the fact that being a Hindu Gandhi is supporting the Muslims strongly. That was one of the major reasons for assassinating Gandhi.
